Back to the Air Show: Ten Years Later
There are some family traditions that become even more meaningful with time. This weekend, we returned to an air show that we first attended about ten years ago. As soon as we arrived, memories started flooding back.
The air show featured incredible World War II aircraft along with modern flying demonstrations. I’ve always been fascinated by the history behind these planes. Seeing them take to the sky reminds me of the bravery and sacrifice of those who flew them many decades ago. There is something powerful about watching living history soar overhead.
As I watched the planes, I couldn’t help but think about how much Jason has grown.
The last time we attended, he was a little boy who couldn’t wait to jump on every inflatable bounce house he could find. He loved running from one activity to another before stopping to admire the airplanes.
This year was completely different.
Instead of spending his time on the inflatables, he carried his phone and focused on photography. He took incredible pictures and videos of the aircraft, carefully capturing the planes as they climbed, rolled, and performed breathtaking maneuvers. It was fun watching him enjoy the show in a completely different way. His interests have grown right along with him.
One of the biggest surprises of the evening was the drone show.
I had never seen one before, and I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Hundreds of lights filled the night sky, creating beautiful images and patterns that seemed almost magical. Technology has come such a long way, and it was amazing to watch. It quickly became one of my favorite parts of the event.
Of course, no summer air show would be complete without fireworks. They were a wonderful way to end the evening and gave everyone one last reason to look toward the sky with amazement.
Like every family outing, there were a couple of things I wished had been different. My only regret was not inviting my dad. The weather was extremely hot, and I wasn’t sure if he’d be comfortable, but I still wish I had asked so he could decide for himself. I also missed having Laura with us. She was out on a date, and while I was happy she was enjoying herself, I couldn’t help but notice she wasn’t there. That’s part of parenting, though. As our children grow older, family traditions begin to change, and we learn to treasure the moments when everyone can be together.
Looking around, I realized this air show had become more than just an afternoon of airplanes. It was a reminder of how quickly time passes. Ten years ago, Jason was bouncing through inflatable houses. Today, he’s capturing memories through the lens of a camera. Before I know it, another ten years will have gone by.
I’m already looking forward to coming back next year. Hopefully, we’ll all be together again, making new memories while remembering the old ones.
Sometimes the best family traditions aren’t about doing something extraordinary. They’re simply about returning to the same place, seeing familiar sights, and realizing just how far you’ve come together.
